We’ve got yet another VST from our friends at Samsara Cycle Audio features today – Kettle Drum VST. It’s a virtual instrument made to emulate a Kettle Drum, also known as a Timpani. The Timpani you may recognize from orchestral music, it is often featured to give an “epic” sound in orchestral music. Played slow and methodical, it can impart a sense of urgency or dread, as if the entire earth may collapse.

If you couldn’t tell, I am a fan of Timpanis. So any VST that reproduces them even somewhat accurately, I am a fan of. You can get some nice, and if you prefer some pretty wild sounds out of this one. It features a banded equalizer, as well as the essential pitch, shape, volume and velocity controls necessary for any sort of real sounding emulation of such a drum.

Timpanis can make a cool splash drum hit for a breakdown or transition. Say for example, at the end of every 4 bars you have a small transition-centered sub dividing of the beat. The Kettle Drum can fill the breakdown space quite nicely. They have a lot of low frequency content, producing what seems like a “drop” in the beat line, which create a nice transition in to the next section of your piece. Even if the section is simply a repetition, the face that there is a beat drop in between (strategically placed to dilineate the parts), makes the track seem more in motion and interesting.
